Meet Wyatt: A Vigilant Waterman
If you've spent time at Aqualand, you've seen Wyatt at work.
He's constantly scanning the water, reading the waves, watching how the tide is moving, noticing where the currents are forming, and keeping track of every group at once. While campers are laughing, playing, and building confidence in the ocean, Wyatt is focused on the thing that matters most: keeping them safe.
Wyatt serves as Aqualand's full-time Ocean Safety Supervisor. Rather than staying with a single group, he rotates throughout our programs, maintaining a bird's-eye view of both campers and changing ocean conditions. He works closely with staff to determine when and where children can safely enter the water, when conditions require adjustments, and when it's time to get everyone back on shore.
His vigilance is backed by an exceptional athletic background.
Wyatt was named both Moore League Swimmer of the Year and Moore League Water Polo Player of the Year. He went on to become a CIF State Champion in multiple swimming events before continuing his career at Golden West College, where he became a school record holder and California Community College State Champion in the 200 Freestyle. He also swam the anchor leg on Golden West's State Championship-winning 800 Freestyle Relay and competed as a state finalist in the 500 Freestyle.
His experience extends well beyond the pool. Wyatt is a Waikiki Roughwater Swim Youth Champion and a Seal Beach Junior Lifeguard alumnus who grew up in the ocean, learning firsthand how quickly conditions can change and how important it is to respect the water. He also spent a year training with the Marseille men's water polo team, gaining experience in a high-level international environment that further strengthened his discipline, work ethic, and understanding of what it means to prepare with purpose.
Wyatt's connection to Aqualand runs even deeper. As our oldest son, he has been immersed in ocean life since childhood. For 20 years, Matty has mentored and trained him as a waterman—teaching him how to read the ocean, recognize hazards before they develop, make conservative decisions under pressure, and understand that confidence in the water must always be matched by humility and respect.
For the past five years, Wyatt has supervised and instructed children in ocean environments, helping young people build confidence while never losing sight of safety. He holds certifications in CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS), but perhaps more importantly, he brings a lifetime of practical experience shaped by thousands of hours spent in and around the water.
At Aqualand, Wyatt doesn't work alone. Every member of our staff is selected because they meet our expectations for water skills and genuinely enjoy working with children. Many have competitive athletic backgrounds, years of experience mentoring young people, and a shared belief that creating a safe environment and creating a fun environment go hand in hand. Wyatt's role is to provide an additional layer of oversight—supporting instructors, monitoring conditions, and ensuring that safety remains everyone's priority.
At Aqualand, ocean safety isn't a checklist—it's a mindset.
It means avoiding the Anderson rip and moving to the sandbar when conditions warrant. It means maintaining low staff-to-camper ratios. It means rotating Boogie Wonderland campers through the water in small groups, keeping Seal Training participants close together under direct supervision, and limiting Surf Camp to inside conditions that meet strict safety standards.
Most importantly, it means having people whose sole focus is the well-being of the children in their care.
Parents often ask what makes Aqualand different. The answer isn't a piece of equipment or a written policy. It's people.
People like Wyatt—and an entire team of capable watermen and waterwomen who love sharing the ocean with kids and are committed to helping every camper build confidence, respect for the water, and memories that last long after summer ends.
