Seal Training is an ocean readiness and physical education program for students developing the foundational skills needed to safely and confidently participate in ocean activities such as surfing, Junior Guards, and open water swimming. Designed to complement traditional swim instruction, this program supports the transition from pool-based skills to real ocean environments through structured, instructor-led progression focused on water safety, endurance, and skill development. This is a drop-off class, though we maintain an open door policy for parents. Our typical instructor-to-student ratio is 6:1, depending on students’ ability in the water, and we adjust staffing as needed to maintain safety and quality instruction.
Location
Our primary location will be Surfside (Anderson Street), with occasional sessions in Alamitos Bay depending on ocean conditions and instructional needs. Locations may shift based on surf, tides, weather, and group ability. Communication will always be provided through GroupMe so families know where to meet. We operate in a variety of weather conditions, using the natural environment as part of the instructional experience.
What to Expect
Seal Training introduces students to ocean safety, wave navigation, and foundational waterman skills through structured, progressive instruction. Students build confidence and competency in dynamic ocean conditions while developing endurance, coordination, and situational awareness. Students will work on: 🌊 Ocean safety and environmental awareness
🏊 Open water swimming and breath control
🤙 Body surfing and wave positioning
🌊 Boogie board skills and board handling
🏃 Movement, balance, and physical conditioning
🌞 Decision-making in changing ocean conditions
The goal is to develop capable, confident ocean participants through consistent, guided instruction. Seal Training serves as a strong preparatory program for students interested in Junior Guards, surfing, and other ocean-based activities.
Beyond the Water
When ocean conditions are not ideal, instruction continues on land through structured physical education and team-based activities designed to reinforce skill development, communication, and problem-solving. Students may participate in:
🏃 Structured beach conditioning and movement drills
🌊 Ocean safety instruction and situational awareness exercises
🤝 Team-based challenges focused on communication and leadership
🎯 Nerf-based target drills and strategic team exercises
🧗 Obstacle courses emphasizing coordination and endurance
🏆 Mission-based challenges that build resilience, teamwork, and decision-making These activities support overall physical development while reinforcing concepts learned in the water.
