Way of the Bay is a water-based enrichment program focused on paddling, watercraft skills, marine science, and outdoor learning in the calm waters of Alamitos Bay. This class is ideal for students who enjoy being on the water and want to explore the bay environment while building confidence and independence.
Students will spend the morning paddling and learning how to safely operate different types of watercraft while gaining a deeper understanding of the marine ecosystem around them.
This program is best suited for children who are comfortable in the water. Students must be water safe and able to swim independently.
This is a drop-off class, though we maintain an open door policy for parents.
Our typical instructor-to-student ratio is 6:1, depending on students’ ability in the water, and we adjust staffing as needed to maintain safety and quality instruction.
Led by Mrs. Sam Dupray and Aqualand staff. Sam is a Long Beach Lifeguard and homeschool educator who brings a strong passion for ocean safety, environmental education, and getting kids comfortable on the water.
Location
Our primary location will be Alamitos Bay, where calm waters allow students to safely practice paddling and watercraft skills.
Exact meeting locations may shift depending on tides, weather, and daily conditions, and communication will always happen through GroupMe so families know where to meet.
We operate in all weather conditions and use the natural environment as part of the learning experience.
What to Expect
Students will learn how to move confidently on the water while developing awareness of tides, currents, and the marine life that calls the bay home.
Activities may include:
🛶 Kayaking and canoe paddling
🏄 Stand-up paddleboarding and watercraft handling
🌊 Water safety and bay awareness
🐚 Marine science and coastal ecosystem learning
🏃 Beach and shoreline games
🌞 Outdoor exploration and teamwork
Students build strength, coordination, and confidence while learning to respect and understand the bay environment.
Beyond the Water
When water conditions require us to stay out of the water, students may participate in activities such as:
🌊 Marine science exploration
🧭 Basic navigation and water awareness
🏃 Beach fitness and team games
🐚 Coastal ecology and environmental education
These activities help students develop a deeper connection to the water and the environment around them.
